When evaluating a set of linens one of the most important considerations is the strength of the construction of the cloth. Hems should be firm and evenly stitched. Cloth which simply has a stitching around the edge will soon pull out and the cloth will fray. The weave of the cloth should be even with little or no variation in the weave. With jacquard weave or damask, the design should stand out a bit but not so much as to be likely to catch and pull.
Prior to weaving and spinning, the women would color the flax. Bleaching the fine Swedish table linens was difficult, as many of the dyes were not colorfast. Some of the natural dyes that were utilized were from natural findings leaves, lichens, moss, and bark. In the rare occasions when other colors were requested, they could buy colorings--logwood, gambier, indigo, and Farnock (from a tree).
Choose the right colour. If there is a more important factor in interior design than obtaining the right colour, we have yet to discover what it is. Needless to say, this problem is just as relevant in the area of table linens. It is important to ensure that whichever covers you choose to buy fit in well with the colours of the room you have intended them for. Whether you have got a naturalistic colour scheme based around subtle blues, greens and greys or are more inclined towards brighter reds and oranges, you can be sure that taking the time to obtain the right coloured linens will be a decision that you will not regret.
