The second approach is to take some time before even beginning to search to decide how you will be using the linens. Are they for everyday use? Are they for a more formal evening of entertaining your friends? Are they intended to decorate for holiday atmosphere? Do you like to iron? Will children be seated at the table? Once you have the answers to these questions you are ready to begin.
In terms of producing the linen, most histories agree that men were given the responsibility of the heavier work carrying and lifting and transport of materials. Women were taught from a young age about the craft of linen. Many of the children and older women were in charge of less delicate jobs, while those with manual dexterity and stamina were given the task of making the higher quality fine Swedish table linens on one of the many looms.
Real linen is a fine fabric that must be treated carefully. It is a natural fiber, so you will need to treat it as such. Natural fibers, in general, can shrink, lose shape, and break if treated harshly. Do not wash natural fibers in hot water. You will also want to avoid excessive agitation and harsh detergents. Most washing machines have a low, hand-wash setting that is fine for table linens. If you are worried, you can use your bathtub.
