The woman was delighted to find Calle as she herself had bought a fine Swedish table linen from Calle is father in 1948 just after she was married. Now, recently widowed after fifty-seven years and returned to Norway to live she was delighted to learn she could finally buy some napkins woven from the same loom as the tablecloth. She had her tablecloth with her and purchased matching napkins. Fine Swedish table linen has a long history behind it, but it is the story of the owners and their families are what enrich their legacy. And with the long-standing tradition of linen making and weaving, you too can probably find something to match your great-grandmother linens.
A properly arranged tablecloth for a formal event should hang at least 10 to 12 inches evenly around the table. It can go to the floor, but cannot touch the floor. Casual arrangements are suitable at a 6 to 8 inch drop around the edge of the table. The shape of the table should match the shape of the cloth so a round table should have a round shaped cloth. The main crease in the cloth should run down the center of the table. Layering is a popular practice accomplished by laying a longer colored cloth on the table with a shorter one of different color on top. Top a dark cloth with a white lace or shear cloth of the same size. Table skirts that gather and attach at the edge of the table falling to the floor, are suitable for formal events like banquets or weddings. Skirts are easily rented from local linen services. Matching or contrasting napkins can be placed folded to the left of each plate, on the plate or folded in interesting shapes and placed on the table setting or in a glass.
Wash gently in cool water. Use detergent that is dye-free to avoid stains and mineral deposits. Some people prefer to use distilled water on white or light colored fabrics to avoid deposits and discolorations. If possible, use a detergent that is meant for delicate fabrics or a small amount of baby shampoo. Very gently move the fabric around to loosen stains. Drain the tub and then refill several times to wash away detergents. Never squeeze or wring out delicate fabrics. You could cause it to shrink or break the delicate fibers causing runs.
