Glass ovenproof bakeware is made from tempered glass and conducts heat well. It is fairly easy to clean, does not stain, and does not react to acidic foods. Ovenproof glass can be taken from the refrigerator and placed in a hot oven, but when you remove it from the oven, cool it to room temperature before putting in the refrigerator or exposing to water to avoid cracking. Glass bakeware heats faster and holds heat longer than metal, so reduce baking temperatures by approximately 25 degree F from the recipe instructions. Care: Wash with hot soapy water and loosen stuck on food by soaking in warm water. Avoid metal scrapers and abrasive cleaners.
Silicone bakeware can withstand high temperatures without absorbing the heat. This allows foods to cook evenly throughout the pan. Other bakeware can inhibit easy distribution of heat and cause foods to burn in some sections of the pan while remaining undercooked in other areas. Bakeware made with silicone can also go right from the freezer to the oven without any cooking problems.
The extremes in temperature that may cause other bakeware materials harm such as glass do not affect silicone products. Silicone spatulas are a much better choice than rubber or plastic products which can become damaged when using under high temperatures. The silicone spatulas are just one type of silicone bakeware that allows you to be more versatile in your cooking.
The pieces are also very flexible, which helps you pack them up or store them in a tight or cramped place in your kitchen. Packing up your silicone bakeware is also much easier than rigid metal or glass. The pieces are non-stick and come in a variety of bright colors. They are durable and wo not break, chip or dent when used. Toss the pieces in a cabinet without worrying that the silicone bakeware will become damaged.
Teflon Bakeware is still a popular choice for its nonstick properties. The slick coating makes easy work of clean up, and leaves the food intact. Cookies and breads slide right off the coated surface making it ideal to use when a pretty presentation is essential. Extra care must be taken when using and cleaning Teflon so it does not become scratched, which will ruin the nonstick properties of the surface. Metal utensils should be avoided; instead plastic tools must be used to avoid scratching the nonstick coating.
Non-stick bakeware consists of steel or aluminum with a non-stick coating, which allows food to easily peel off from the surface of the bakeware. So this type of bakeware works particularly for items such as muffins and layered cakes. Once again, the non-stick coating gives the bakeware a darker surface, which absorbs heat quickly, so make sure the food is not overly browned or dried out. Care: Wash in hot soapy water and for stuck on food, use warm water to loosen. Do not use metal utensils or knives on the bakeware surface.
Pyrex is the original glass Bakeware. You can see through the dishes to see what you are cooking. It is no longer just available in clear glass, though, you can purchase different shades of Pyrex to coordinate with your kitchen. That way you can take the dishes out of the oven and put them right on the table, giving it even more appeal. Unfortunately, glass can chip, crack and break, so if you drop Pyrex or other glass dish, it is probably a goner.
